| The PGA SHAGS (or Southern Hemisphere Area Golf Society) ended the 2006 season in style with the Christmas Kina Cup event, otherwise known as the Crofskey Benefit Memorial.
The prestigious invitational was held at the Kina Cliffs course in Tasman, New Zealand. The Kina Cup is a co-sanctioned SLAGS/SHAGS event with SLAGS ranking points available.
The course is a very hilly stern test of shite golf and has all the latest facilities ...
Traditionally the tournament is an orgy of outrageous high ladies handicap mayhem, Mulligans, foot wedges, air shots and imaginative work with the pencil.
In 2006, the Kina Cup stepped up to the plate and became a co-sanctioned SLAGS/SHAGS event with SLAGS ranking points available. An invitation was handed out to veteran shite golfer El Nino Beneriano and the Kina Cup braced itslef to go to a new level .. of shiteness.
The 'Cup' is traditionally presented to Paul Crofskey and this year was no different. In previous years, no handicaps have been required to sort out the chaff from the chaff, but with the arrival of some real class (El Nino), Crofskey organised some lady boy 36 handicaps for the veteran SHAGS tour pros.
From the first hole, it was clear the Cup was heading back to Krovskey. A neat par 4 at the short 1st gained him 4 stableford points. A good effort for a 36 handicapper. It would only be a question of whether his miserly handicap allowance of 2 strokes per hole could get him through the round.
Choker
Josh started hot ... maybe too hot. He was 'there or there abouts' right to the end. He narrowly missed the playoffs with the most outrageous display of choking on the last three holes. It was reminiscent of Norman at the Masters in 1996. His Long drive win on the 10th was some consolation.
El Nino played it smart. Armed only with his D game and a putter that varied from lukewarm to tepid. His plan was to locate the difficult sloping fariways and keep the ball in play on the short hilly layout. He was the half way leader and kept in touch until the last hole.
2005 champ Craig, started hot, then caught fire, before burning out completely. The wooden spoon and the Nearest the Pin were easily his.
Kina Comeback
Derek started well at the first, then blew out the next 4 holes. In one of the great Kina Cup comebacks he started a run which brought him to a share of the lead at the 18th tee along with Josh, El Nino and Krovinsky.
Sixes for Del and Paul at the 18th earned the 3 points and the right to enter the playoff for the holy grail of SHAGS golf. Derek then gifted the title to Kruvski with a massive 14 at the playoff hole (the par 3 4th) and competition fizzled out.
Krofskey was champion again for the 3rd time out of 4, his only blemish coming in 2005 when he tied for first place but lost in a playoff to a freak chip in.
El Nino mentioned the 'sporting' SLAGS tradition of the reigning SLAGS Masters champion taking a handicap cut the following year to lessen the chance of the same handicap bandelero winning each time .... ha ha ha .. how they laughed.
Kofskey was crowned with the traditional Black Sombrero. His 3-peat was complete and a legend begun.
